I regularly get asked by clients...Do you have any tips to prepare for the day?...Yes! Here are a few answers to common questions regarding headshot photo sessions.
Q1. WHAT IS A HEADSHOT
A headshot photo has loosely been used for all sorts of business photo portraits.
It's not full body or three-quarters of your body or even waist-up. It's basically from the tip of your head down to your breast area. A headshot will include your shoulders and head - hence the term: (HEAD)SHOT
A headshot is a photograph that represents you at your best. It should display you in a way that best fits the needs of the image. Generally, headshot images help to make your clients view you as professional, friendly, and approachable.
Depending on the desired use for the image - It may even be created in such a way to give the impression of power, authority, and importance. It's all in the eyes and facial expressions.
Q2. HOW CAN I RELAX?... I HATE HAVING MY PHOTO TAKEN!
Most people dont like being in-front of a camera, but it's amazing how many great images can be made after you realize it's nothing to be worried about.
Headshot sessions are a relaxed opportunity to create a few posed and capture some candid shots. You will see your photos on-screen and be able to choose the ones you like best before they are edited and delivered. I shoot till you are happy and you choose what you like.
I am often told by clients they hate having their photo taken, but they tell me get delivered the best images they have seen of themselves!
You could think of your headshot session as a game, a performance. If performing is your profession - you generally get paid for a performance - right?...
This performance will help make you stand out, you're trying to promote yourself as a professional. Adopt the mindset it will be fun, it won't take long, and it will be an added boost your portfolio!
Q3 . WHAT DO I WEAR?
Wear what you would usually wear to work. You want to look like a professional - so dress like one that best represents your industry.
FOR WOMEN: Don't have an outfit that has so many patterns that your face is lost in the outfit. Wear something that makes you feel good about yourself - your favourite outfit. This will project in your mood on the day and overall, you will feel happier about the way you look coming into your shoot.
Unless you have a uniform, just keep it simple. Where possible - neutral colors work best.
FOR MEN: Wear a suit, at least the Jacket. A collared shirt, and a tie if that's what you usually wear. Avoid wearing t-shirts and something too casual.
Q4. ARE THERE ANY SPECIFIC TIPS FOR WOMEN?
MAKE-UP is one area that is very important. Neutral colours work the best when being photographed. Less is best when applying your makeup on the day. It's good to check your make-up again, BEFORE stepping in front of the camera.
Every little detail will be visible in the images. The few issues I have come across are:
MASCARA - Ensure it's not so thick that eyelashes stick together and look clogged.
FOUNDATION - Too much foundation in photos can create a look where your skin can look unnatural. Remember, any blemishes are easily removed in post-processing before they are delivered to you.
HAIR - This is a big one. No woman is happy with her hair. It's best to go and check your hair in the mirror before walking in front of the camera. Make sure you're comfortable with the way it sits and is styled... Washing the night before may be a good idea to help ensure it does what its told.
TEETH - Don't be afraid to show teeth - All images will have your 'teeth whitened' in post processing.
Q5. ARE THERE ANY SPECIFIC TIPS FOR MEN?
UNWANTED HAIR - Since the images will be high-resolution and every little detail is visible, please ensure your EAR, NOSE, EYEBROWS and FACIAL hair is maintained.
Your face will be the most visible part of the image. Men may need some preparation like the following:
SKIN - A light moisturiser applied on the morning of the shoot, you dont want the tight-dry skin look. If you dont have any, ask your partner's permission to use a little of her facial cream - make sure it's not tinted/colored in any way. If needed you can wash it off before the shoot.
EYEBROWS - This is one area that is regularly overlooked, and can resemble something that looks more like steel wool. You want people to know you have attention to detail?...so look the part. This attention should be visible in your appearance. A headshot - if viewed full sized will fill the monitor of your screen. Every detail will be seen. Photoshop can help, but it's best to do a little man-scaping before setting foot in front of camera.
Mono-Brows are a bad look - especially for professionals. Hair removal cream is simple and easy to use, is cheap, and generally available from any supermarket. TIP - get your partner to apply it, and be careful try it on a small area of skin first to make sure you dont have some negative reaction to it.
Any beauty salon for women can trim your brows for $30 or less - but this is best to be done at least ONE WEEK before your shoot if you get any hair removed by waxing it may leave red marks, so give your skin time to recover.
Q6. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE & WHAT HAPPENS ON THE SHOOT?
A6. It should take no longer than 15 minutes.
Some have had their sessions completed in as little as a few mins. It all depends on how long it takes for you to relax and be happy with the shots we get. Once you have made your selection on the computer - it's as good as done.
The first few shots are a warmup. Image quality, exposure for flash and ambient lighting is double-checked.
If there is specific guidelines for your images we will stick to that - for example (front on, right or left side on to the camera) but we will shoot left, right and front on to help you see which side you prefer.
Although there is a minimum quantity that will be agreed upon for delivery before the day - it's possible you will receive more images, and you can use the others for social media accounts or similar platforms.
Q7. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR MY IMAGES TO BE DELIVERED?
A7. I usually have individual images delivered within 24 hours. For larger groups that are taken on the same day it may take up to 7 days.
You - or your company - will be sent the link to a private gallery with password to view and save your images from the screen - including to a mobile device.
There will also be a download link to download all images at once. NOTE- this link expires after 30 days.
Q8. HOW CAN I PAY?
A8. Mobile EFTPOS and CREDIT facilities are available onsite. Invoice payments are payable on the day via direct deposit - unless prior payment arrangements have been made.
Q9. WHAT IF I AM NOT HAPPY WITH MY HEADSHOT IMAGES?
A9. As you get to see your images on the day - and you choose what you want delivered, I generally dont offer a refund unless I am at fault somehow.
If, for some reason there is a problem with the edited images, I am happy to re-edit to your satisfaction for free.
If the editing involves removing unwanted items from the background or on your person, there may be an additional charge.
If somehow I am at fault and the images recorded are incorrect, then I will be happy to come back and reshoot your image, at no cost to you.
Q10. HOW OFTEN SHOULD I UPDATE MY HEADSHOT?
A10. Most clients update their headshots at least once a year. Some choose to update after a hairstyle change or change in job - new uniform.
When clients think of you, your name pops into their minds, and then your name is connected to a face.
Don't let your clients see the same image of you everytime they see you on LINKEDIN or similar platforms.
Keep it updated and fresh to imply you move with the times. As the world changes you adapt and grow with it too.
Q11. WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS FOR HEADSHOT BACKGROUNDS?
A11. White backgrounds are generally the standard for a corporate headshot.
A business environment is an option for a headshot.
You can also have an outdoor session for a different look.
